Why Your Laptop Slows Down After a Year (And the One Fix That Actually Works)

The real reason your laptop got slow

You've run Windows updates, scanned for malware, reinstalled the OS, added RAM. Still sluggish. Here's the truth nobody at the Geek Squad will tell you: it's thermal paste.

The grey paste between your CPU and its heatsink dries out. Takes 2–4 years. When it hardens, heat stops transferring efficiently. CPU hits 95°C within seconds of any real work, Windows panics, throttles the clock speed to protect the chip, and your "new-when-bought" laptop performs like a decade-old netbook.

How to confirm it's thermal throttling

Install HWMonitor or Core Temp (both free). Open it, then open any heavy app — a game, video export, Chrome with 30 tabs. Watch the CPU temperature.

  • If it climbs to 90–100°C and stays there → thermal throttling. Thermal paste is the fix.
  • If it stays under 75°C but the laptop is still slow → it's software, not hardware.

The fix: 20 minutes, ₹200 of supplies

  1. Buy thermal compound: Arctic MX-4, Noctua NT-H1, Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut. Any reputable one, ₹200–600 for a 2g tube that'll last a decade.
  2. Isopropyl alcohol (99% if available), cotton buds, a small Phillips screwdriver.
  3. Watch a YouTube teardown specific to your laptop model ("Dell Inspiron 15 3511 disassembly"). Every model is different.
  4. Power off, remove battery if removable, unscrew bottom panel, locate CPU and GPU under the copper heat pipes.
  5. Unscrew the heatsink (note the numbered order stamped on it — unscrew opposite corners in rotation).
  6. Clean both surfaces with IPA on a cotton bud until no paste residue remains.
  7. Apply a pea-sized drop on the CPU die. Don't spread it — the heatsink pressure spreads it uniformly. Too much is worse than too little.
  8. Reassemble, tighten in the numbered order, boot up.

Result

A laptop that was hitting 98°C and throttling to 1.2 GHz will now sit at 65–75°C under the same load and run at its rated boost clock. This is the single highest-ROI repair you can do on any laptop older than two years.

What's not worth doing

  • Replacing the SSD if you already have one
  • Adding more RAM if you have 8+ GB and aren't swapping
  • "PC cleaner" software
  • Reinstalling Windows (again)

Paste fixes it. Don't throw out a perfectly good laptop.
